CHRISTINA LUNDBERG - FILMMAKER

Christina Lundberg is an award winning filmmaker who has made movies on Buddhism for over 20 years. See her Movie Bio below. Christina has been a student of Garchen Rinpoche’s for 17 years and tells the story of how this film project was born and has progressed:

A Story That Must Be Told

In December 2006, Garchen Rinpoche said to me, that over the years many of his students had requested there be a movie made about his life. He asked me to compile some old footage into a movie that could be shown to his students to help them remember him after he had passed away. I knew there was a very limited amount of footage and since filmmaking is my profession I asked if I could instead make a professional movie with new and old footage combined. Rinpoche agreed, saying the more comprehensive the film the more benefit there would be. I realized how important it was for his story to be told.

Garchen Rinpoche in Israel
Christina Lundberg filming Garchen Rinpoche in Jerusalem, Israel

I began filming in January 2007 and for 3 years documented Garchen Triptrul Rinpoche’s extraordinary life and teachings in 14 countries. Because of your generosity and support, I have been successful in filming what I had hoped to capture.

Due to Rinpoche’s kindness and unusual openness, he has given me film access to both the public and private moments of his life. Thus the footage that is now gathered is truly unprecedented. It may be the most comprehensive collection of footage of a master of his stature that has ever been captured.

There was a very special time period of intensive training that occured for a select few in Tibet, and it can never be recreated again. Garchen Rinpoche is one of a handful of masters from this disappearing generation. Therefore, it is extremely precious and rare to have his immeasurable enlightened activities captured on film. Ultimately, I believe the reason this film project is manifesting is because Garchen Rinpoche sees and fully understands how much benefit his legacy and blessings will bring to the world, long after he has passed away.

I wanted to share some of my personal observations from the road since I have been in the unique position to witness Garchen Rinpoche in so many diverse cultures. Even though I’ve been his student for 17 years, I am continually amazed and deeply inspired by his infinite wisdom and by the compassion he has for absolutely everyone he encounters. He is a model of unconditional love embodied in a human being.

I can assure you the journey has been beyond words, which makes it challenging to express his inconceivable qualities. Yet, I have experienced Rinpoche’s vast magnificence, depth and profound presence at work in our world; all through the lens of the camera. Because of this I am confident that this film is the best medium to transmit the experience of Garchen Rinpoche to millions of others.
